Conocimos a Fernanda y a Álvaro dos veranos antes de la boda, cuando todavía estaban pensando si casarse en Madrid o irse a Lisboa con doce amigos y ya. Al final eligieron Madrid, eligieron a los noventa y dos y nos eligieron a nosotros. Sin grandes peticiones, solo que la cosa no se atascara y que se cenara antes de las nueve.

We met Fernanda and Álvaro two summers before the wedding, when they were still deciding whether to do it in Madrid or run off to Lisbon with twelve friends. They went for Madrid, for the ninety-two, and for us. Their only ask was that the day wouldn't stall and that dinner would be served before nine.

Eligieron Los Calizos, una finca al norte de Madrid pegada al pie de la sierra. Hay dos casonas de piedra, un campo grande con encinas y una carpa de madera levantada al borde del prado. Si el tiempo aguanta, todo pasa fuera. En octubre aguantó.

They chose Los Calizos, a country estate north of Madrid right at the foot of the sierra. Two stone houses, a big meadow dotted with holm oaks, and a wooden marquee built at the edge of the field. If the weather holds, everything happens outside. In October it did.

La mañana, los preparativos

The morning, the getting ready

Llegamos a la casa pequeña sobre las diez. Fernanda estaba descalza, escuchando música a través del altavoz pequeño y con el pelo todavía mojado. Pidió un recogido sin laca, maquillaje casi sin maquillaje, y se vistió la última. El vestido era de cuello halter y espalda completamente abierta. Los zapatos amarillos los reservó para la sesión de tarde y se pasó todo el día con unas sandalias de raso bajas que nadie vio.

We arrived at the small house around ten. Fernanda was barefoot, listening to music on a small speaker, her hair still wet. She asked for a low bun without hairspray, almost-no-makeup makeup, and got dressed last. The dress was halter-neck with a completely open back. She kept the yellow heels for the afternoon session and wore low satin sandals all day that no one ever saw.

Álvaro se vistió en la casa grande con sus dos hermanos y su padre. Traje color piedra de tres piezas, corbata paisley en azules y dorados que un amigo le había traído de Londres meses atrás, y unos gemelos de plata que le había regalado Fernanda en su primer aniversario. Antes de bajar al jardín, los tres hermanos se hicieron una foto rápida en el balcón. No nos pidieron que la hiciéramos. La hicieron ellos con el móvil de su padre.

Álvaro got ready in the big house with his two brothers and his father. A three-piece stone-coloured suit, a paisley tie in blues and golds a friend had brought him from London months earlier, and silver cufflinks Fernanda had given him on their first anniversary. Before heading down to the garden, the three brothers took a quick photo on the balcony. They didn't ask us to take it. They did it themselves on their father's phone.

La ceremonia fue civil, a las cuatro y media, en una explanada del prado bajo dos encinas grandes. Noventa y dos sillas de madera colocadas en U. Hacía calor para ser octubre. Los invitados se abanicaban con el cuadernillo de los votos que les habían dejado en cada silla. El padre de Fernanda la acompañó por un pasillo de hierba mientras la gente aplaudía sin parar. Ella iba riéndose y llorando a partes iguales, lo cual ya nos avisó: el día iba a ser así.

The ceremony was civil, at half past four, on a clearing in the meadow under two big holm oaks. Ninety-two wooden chairs arranged in a U. It was warm for October. Guests fanned themselves with the little programme of vows left on each chair. Fernanda's father walked her down a grass aisle while everyone clapped without stopping. She was laughing and crying at the same time, which already told us how the day was going to go.

Los votos los habían escrito juntos esa misma semana, una tarde en su piso de Madrid, con una botella de tinto de Cebreros. Álvaro leyó los suyos en voz baja y muy serio. Fernanda los leyó casi gritando, sin importarle que se le saltara la voz. Cuando terminaron, los invitados levantaron las manos llenas de pétalos secos y los tiraron al aire mientras los dos caminaban hacia atrás por el mismo pasillo. La foto de salida la hicimos en analógico, en un 35mm que llevábamos cargado para ese momento.

They had written their vows together that same week, one afternoon in their flat in Madrid, with a bottle of red wine from Cebreros. Álvaro read his quietly and very seriously. Fernanda read hers almost shouting, not caring if her voice cracked. When they finished, the guests raised their hands full of dried petals and threw them in the air as the two of them walked back down the same aisle. We shot the exit on film, with a 35mm we had loaded just for that moment.

La sesión de pareja al borde del prado

Después del cóctel nos los robamos veinticinco minutos al otro extremo de la finca, donde el prado se abre y se ve la sierra entera. Eran las siete y media, la luz estaba muy baja y el sol entraba por encima de los robles. Casi no les dijimos nada. Si les pides cosas, dejan de mirarse. Fernanda se quitó los zapatos amarillos en cuanto pisó la hierba y se los dejó a Álvaro en la mano para que los llevara él.

After the cocktail hour we stole them away for twenty-five minutes to the far end of the estate, where the meadow opens up and you can see the whole sierra. It was half past seven, the light was very low, and the sun was coming in over the oaks. We hardly said a thing. If you ask them for things, they stop looking at each other. Fernanda pulled off the yellow heels the moment she stepped onto the grass and handed them to Álvaro so he'd carry them.

Al volver hacia la carpa los amigos de Álvaro lo cargaron a hombros por el campo en una cosa improvisada que duró tres veces más de lo que pensaba nadie. Acabaron los seis tirados riéndose en la hierba, con Álvaro recolocándose la camisa. Esa serie en blanco y negro la entregamos con el resto, sin retocar.

On the walk back to the marquee, Álvaro's friends carried him on their shoulders across the field in something improvised that lasted three times longer than anyone expected. The six of them ended up flat on the grass laughing, with Álvaro tucking his shirt back in. We delivered that black-and-white series with the rest of the take, untouched.

Cenaron bajo la carpa, mesas largas, sin presidencia ni mesas asignadas, con copas verdes antiguas que la finca alquila y vajilla de loza blanca con borde fino. El catering era de un grupo pequeño de Madrid que cocina con producto del huerto del propio Los Calizos. Discurso del hermano pequeño de Fernanda, dos minutos exactos, muy bien medido. Una amiga leyó un fragmento de un libro que no contamos para no destriparlo a quien lo busque. El primer baile fue debajo de las vigas de la carpa, con todo el mundo grabando alrededor con el móvil.

They had dinner under the marquee, long tables, no head table, no assigned seating, with the old green glasses the estate rents out and white china with a thin gold rim. The catering came from a small Madrid outfit that cooks with produce from Los Calizos's own garden. Speech by Fernanda's younger brother, exactly two minutes, very well timed. A friend read a passage from a book that we won't name so as not to spoil it for anyone who goes looking. The first dance was under the marquee beams, with everyone filming it from their phones.

Nos fuimos sobre las tres de la mañana con la fiesta todavía aguantando. Fernanda y Álvaro estaban en una esquina del porche compartiendo un pitillo del que ninguno de los dos iba a acordarse al día siguiente. No les hicimos la foto. A veces es mejor así.

We left around three in the morning with the party still holding. Fernanda and Álvaro were on a corner of the porch sharing a cigarette neither of them was going to remember the next morning. We didn't take that picture. Sometimes it's better that way.
